i just wondered if you could help me out. for my media work (A2) i need to find out different peoples opinions on women in horror films. if you have seen the films The Descent, The Grudge and The Doll Master could you please reply with how you think the women are represented in them. an example would help too, but dont worry! if you could i would be very appreciative! lots of love Krankhaft-engel |

Ok. iv only seen Descent and The Grudge, so i'll try me best...
The Descent makes u believe that it is all about strong women playing main leads in a horror film (a must neglected area of horror films). Or does it?? the main gal is portrayed as bravely facing the tragedy in her life and doin her best to overcome it. All her friends are sympathetic and willing to help. even the one who'd had an affiar with her late husband (the ho, hehe). but by the end we see these 'strong' women fallin apart in the midst of chaos. the 'brave' gung-ho gal ends up killing one of her own friends in an act of pure panic, and by the end of the film, the main gal - who we were led to believe wais the hero of the piece - murders her adulterous friend in an exact of bloody vengeance. Finally, she is left alone, driven to insanity. Hmm, maybe the film wasn't about strong female roles after all?? The Grudge on the other hand, is less about physical terror, than psychological. The Grudge is an angry spirit of an abused wife who then goes onto psychologically torture the main character. Alot of examples of women being victimised, terrorfied and generally f*cked over. And to all signs not doing a single thing to exorcise the Grudge's spirit (judging from the numerous sequels lol). The audience is meant to empathise with the main gal - to root for her - but ultimately her struggle is hopeless. Hope this was helpful Jimmy |
